E-Newsletter, Opus 4: Summer, 2011
Greetings to you all, our friends, supporters, and colleagues, and WELCOME to the latest edition of our e-newsletter.
Latest News
The Amernet String Quartet is happy to announce that, with the support of our colleagues at Florida International University, we have recently signed a new, multiyear contract which ensures our longevity at FIU and allows us to continue to make this world-class institution worlds ahead. We thank President Mark Rosenberg, Provost Douglas Wartzok, Dean Brian Schriner, and Orlando Garcia, director of the School of Music, for their faith in and commitment to the Amernet! In addition, we are delighted to have been invited by Dean Lesley Northup and Associate Dean Juan Carlos Espinosa to teach a course in FIU's Honors College, where we will bring the music we love into social and cultural context – there are great things brewing at FIU!
Today
*Summer has arrived!
After a very busy academic year as Artists-in-Residence at Florida International University in Miami, we've embarked upon the summer season. In the coming weeks, the Amernet String Quartet will perform on one of our favorite local series, the Mainly Mozart Festival, at the Westin Colonnade Hotel in Coral Gables, FL. On Sunday, May 29, we'll play the monumental G-major quartet of Schubert, the composer's last; and on Sunday, June 5, among other works, we'll present Janacek's Kreutzer Sonata, after the Tolstoy novella of the same name, and the Dvorak piano quintet, alongside our FIU colleague, Dr. Jose Lopez. We'll look forward to seeing you there. And while you're online, visit our new page on InstantEncore: AmernetStringQuartet InstantEncore as well as our facebook page: AmernetStringQuartet Facebook in addition to our website, www.amernetquartet.com , to keep up-to-date on all the latest goings-on with the Amernet.
Tomorrow
The rest of the summer takes the Amernet String Quartet across the country, where we will perform for friends old and new. From July 3, we'll be in residence at the Madeline Island Music Camp, situated in an idyllic spot in Lake Superior, where we will teach some of the most talented string players of tomorrow and work with our friends and colleagues Evelina Chao, Jorja Fleezanis, and Kenneth Goldsmith. Visit http://www.music-camp.org/ for more information. We'll then continue directly onward to Durango, Colorado, for a week of performances and teaching at Music in the Mountains, where we will collaborate with Guillermo Figueroa and many others. For more information about studying with us there, visit http://www.newconservatory.org/cmitm/ or http://musicinthemountains.com for the concert schedule. Our next stop will be the Summit Music Festival in Pleasantville, New York, where the Amernet String Quartet will teach gifted students and revisit the epic quintet of Sergei Taneyev with our dear friend, cellist Jeffrey Solow – see http://www.summitmusicfestival.org/ for more information. The last weeks of the summer will then see the Amernet String Quartet appearing once again at Music Mountain in Connecticut on August 6 with cellist Yehuda Hanani; for the Nantucket Musical Arts Society on August 8 and 9; at the Maverick Concerts in Woodstock, New York, with pianist Justin Kolb on August 14; and finally for Impromptu Concerts in Key West on August 21. It promises to be a fulfilling summer, and we'll look forward to seeing and meeting you around the country! As always, please visit www.amernetquartet.com for more information.
Yesterday
Our regular season has been one of many performances and much personal news. Shortly after the start of the new year, we were saddened by the passing of our dear friend and devoted supporter, Dr. Joel Glaser. He had been a regular at all our South Florida concerts, and was one of the most gentle and kind human beings we've had the pleasure to know. The Amernet String Quartet has started a string scholarship fund at FIU in his memory, the kickoff concert for which will be October 18. Please contact us if you're interested in making a donation.
We continued our concert season with performances at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music with our longtime friend and colleague, pianist James Tocco; the annual FIU String Seminar, with distinguished guest artists Robert deMaine, cello, Valentina Lisitsa, piano, and Yizhak Schotten, viola; and then a short break of a few days in early March, when Michael got married! We were happy to be able to perform the Mozart C-major and Mendelssohn Bb-major viola quintets at the ceremony, with Michael's former teacher, Toby Appel, filling in as violist, and our friend and frequent partner, Chauncey Patterson, joining us as well:
Next on the agenda was our annual performance for the New Music Miami ISCM Festival at the Wolfsonian Museum in Miami Beach, where we presented new works by composers Flores Chaviano, Jorge Grossmann, former FIU School of Music director, Fredrick Kaufman, and current director, Orlando Garcia, with our FIU colleague, bassist Luis Gomez-Imbert. This was followed immediately by several wonderful days at Princeton University, where we performed and recorded two beautiful new works by our friend and faculty member there, Dmitri Tymoczko. The Amernet String Quartet then headed to Mexico, where we appeared at the 7th Colima International Music Festival with our new friend, pianist Anatoly Zatin, and most recently, we traveled to Washington, D.C. for a concert at the Cosmos Club. It's been quite a journey, but well worth the trip!
We thank you as always for your continued interest and support, and of course we always welcome you to contact us anytime with comments, questions, or ideas:
