EDUCATION

The Amernet String Quartet is deeply committed to educating audiences and musicians of all ages.

In addition to our studio and chamber music teaching at Florida International University, we frequently give masterclasses and seminars while on tour, and are particularly keen on reaching out to the young people of our own community in greater Miami – we're always excited to meet and nurture the musicians and audiences of tomorrow!

We are thrilled to be teaching a course for the Honors College at FIU entitled Exploring World Cultures and Societies through the String Quartet where, over the course of weekly sessions with some of the university's most gifted students from all disciplines, we will investigate the place of music and our own quartet repertoire within the socio-political environment of its composition. Examples this year include Haydn, the Esterhazy residency, and the Austrian empire; Ravel and his bohemian circle; Janacek, Tolstoy, and the Kreutzer sonata; Mendelssohn and his posthumous reception in an anti-semitic world; America's burgeoning social and musical landscape in the early-twentieth century, and much more. Please visit http://honors.fiu.edu/news/2011/06/explore-the-world-through-music/ for more information, contact us directly, or feel free to audit the class, Wednesdays at 9a in the Frost Museum of Art on the campus of FIU.

In the coming weeks, we will continue on our educational mission with further workshops and clinics for young people at Deering Estate, the Robert Morgan Educational Center, the Greater Miami Youth Symphony, the Academy of Arts and Minds, the New World School for the Arts, and many more.  Plus, we'll be bringing an innovative program directly to terminally ill children in Miami in December, when we present performances of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, with Dean Brian Schriner of FIU's College of Architecture and the Arts as narrator, at Jackson Memorial Hospital and Miami Children's Hospital and at a benefit on campus for the FIU Haiti Task Force. Stay tuned for more information.
